Tonje Angelsen (born 17 January 1990 in Trondheim, Norway) is one of Norway’s most accomplished high jumpers, recognized for her elegant technique, competitive mindset, and resilience through injuries and comebacks. Representing Trondheim Friidrett and coached by Roger Hollup, Tonje has built an impressive career that includes national titles, international medals, and Olympic appearances. Her personal best outdoors is 1.97 meters, achieved during the 2012 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki, where she won the silver medal—Norway’s first high jump medal at the European level in years. Earlier that year, she had also jumped 1.95 meters to secure her qualification for the London 2012 Olympics. Indoors, she holds a best mark of 1.93 meters. Tonje’s breakthrough came as a junior in 2006 when she cleared 1.82 meters at just 16 years old, setting a Norwegian age-group record. Although injuries affected her progress in the following seasons, her persistence paid off with her stunning comeback in 2012. In addition to her European medal, Tonje has competed in two Olympic Games—London 2012 and Rio 2016—representing Norway on the world stage. Domestically, she is a dominant figure, with multiple national championship titles to her name, both indoor and outdoor. Her jumping style is marked by consistency in the approach, a strong vertical take-off, and graceful bar clearance. Even after time away from elite competition, including a recent comeback, she remains one of the most respected names in Norwegian athletics. Tonje is admired not only for her athletic success but also for her mental toughness and longevity in the sport. She continues to inspire younger athletes in Norway and beyond, proving that with the right mindset and technical foundation, it’s possible to return to form after setbacks.
