father of Patrick Davis, 2022 Alabama State High Jump Champion and 2022 State Championship MVP - Patrick scored 40 points by winning the HJ, 110H, 300H and the open 400mts. - University of Alabama
Michael Davis (Patrick’s Dad): Hugo, I am so fortunate to have met you many years ago that day at Bayside Academy when you were working with Alona Melendez. You have been a big influence in Patrick’s development in both track and his character. I only wish that I could been closer to Houston so he could have taken more training from you. If I could tell anything to anyone looking for a coach/mentor for their kid I would say this “If you want a coach that will develop your child to reach their full potential both athletically and mentally then you have come to the right coach. I can make you guarantee that if your athlete follows his teaching, they will be ready to handle what comes at them for the rest of their life. He is more than just a high jump coach. Please call me and I will be happy to tell you about our experience”.
Michael Davis on Patrick’s performance at the 2022 state meet: I am sending 3 more videos for you. You have his 6’6″ clearance. The video of him running and winning the open 400 meter in 50.05 on Friday. The other two video’s will be his victory in the 110H hurdles with at time of 13.88 and his victory in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 37.73, which is a new 3A state record. I am sending a couple of pictures. Please feel free to use them or any of this message on your web site or Instagram. After all you were a major reason he competed the way he did. On Friday Patrick had two events. He ran the open 400 and then came back 35 minutes later and ran the 110 hurdles qualifying race. Top 8 go to finals. He ran a 50.05 for the 400 win and a 14.03 for the 110 H qualifier. The meet ending around 6:30pm. Let me set the stage for high jump. Patrick jumped in two meets this outdoor season until the week of Easter. He has been focused on breaking school records in the 100, 200, 400, and relays. He started focusing more on high jump the week after Easter. He jumped in a meet on April 22nd and cleared 6ft. I sent you video of last Saturday’s attempt at 6’4″ after running a 400 at 51.53 with 10 minutes rest. This past week his coach just worked on his timing. Saturday morning, we were back at the track at 7am to warm up for the 8am high jump. There were 7 guys that had jumps of 6 feet or higher going into the state meet. Patrick was listed as the 4th best jumper based on last Saturday’s qualifier. Patrick’s coach told me before the event started that he believed that he had about 6-8 quality jumps, so he wanted to be strategic on when to start and when to pass heights. His coach decided to let him take a jump at 5’8″ just to see where he was on the bar. He cleared but video showed him that he needed to be more aggressive. His 5’8″ attempt looked lazy. He passed 6’0″. 4 of the 7 guys went out at 5’10”. At 6’2″ he missed his first attempt. He had great clearance but clipped it when flipping his feet. We had already secured points and Patrick had the 110 hurdles coming up. His coach had confidence in his ability and told me that he would pass to 6’4″. He said he would back his approach 2 shoes and he would clear. One guy cleared 6’2″ on the first attempt and one guy went out. Now 2 people left. At 6’4″ Patrick cleared on his first attempt. The other guy missed but cleared on his 2nd attempt. I believe at this point it became a mental game. The other guy had never cleared 6’4″ and Patrick has, also Patrick has been on this stage before and the other guy had not. At 6’6″ Patrick cleared on his first attempt. The other guy went out. His coach told him that he could have one attempt at 6’7″. He said that he did not want him to get hurt because he had two hurdle races. His attempt at 6’7″ looked like he forgot everything you taught him. Patrick did PR and set a new school record with his victory. Patrick won all four events he was entered in and scored a perfect 40 points and was an MVP for the State Track and Field meet. As I encounter others who high jump, I will continue to suggest that they reach out to you for assistance. I have given your information to several people this year. I will continue to follow the Kangaroo Instagram. I enjoy seeing all these young people have fun and progress in the sport. I promise you that if Patrick and I are ever in the Houston area, you will know well ahead of time. He really wants to come back out and just, I quote, “I want to hang out with Hugo.” Thank you again for guiding Patrick along this journey to maturity. Respectfully, Michael E. Daves
