State Qualifier

There is a quote from a Greek philosopher Epictetus, “Don’t Explain your philosophy,
embody it.” I met Hugo the Summer of my eighth grade year and I learned very quickly that he
lives by three main philosophies. The first philosophy is that attitude and perspective beat natural
talent every time. This was made evident to me not only by his teachings but to the dedication he
gives his athletes. Oftentimes Hugo would make it to practice straight off the plane, hungry,
tired, and sometimes even ill. However, I cannot think of a single time when he has not given his
full effort and energy to every single person in the room. He never lets a challenge, whether that
be physical or mental, impact his coaching potential. His success is easy to understand once you
get to know him and the hard work he puts in 25/8. He doesn’t just talk about work ethic, he
embodies it.
The second philosophy that Hugo embodies is to simply be genuine. As the years have
come and gone, my goals in life have changed and I no longer find myself in the sport of track
and field. However, although different, my connection with Hugo has stayed the same. He was
the first person I called after I placed at State Track and he was the first person I called when I
got into my dream school. I cannot even begin to express the gratitude I have for the endless
random phone calls, mental breakdowns, and crazy jokes he has put up with over the years. He
doesn’t explain genuine care, he embodies it.
The last thing that Hugo lives by is Selflessness. He constantly puts others before himself
even to a detriment. He has picked up my unannounced phone calls on date nights, family
vacations, and even holidays. He does not exclusively save his time for someone currently in his
program. If I need something I call because I know he will answer. Always. He is not just an
amazing coach, he is an amazing person and friend. If Epictetus were alive today I know he
would find no greater support to his philosophy than Hugo Munoz OLY . He does not simply
express dedication, genuineness, and selflessness, he embodies it!
