4X Oregon State High Jump Champion (2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025) and Silver Medal at Nike HS Nationals 2024 (PB: 1.80m / 5'10.75")
Charles Mauro (Caroline’s father): Coach Hugo Munoz is exceptional. My daughter Caroline began training with Coach Munoz last October, and she has had an outstanding experience with his training. He has a gift with young athletes, and I have witnessed his careful guidance not only with my daughter, but also his other athletes. He balances safety, technique, power, encouragement and collegiality in a way that is truly remarkable. He is an advocate and an unwavering force of encouragement to his athletes and he ushers them to improvement in a way that doesn’t seemed rushed or forced. Under Coach Munoz’s guidance Caroline has won state, increased her personal best to 5’10.75” (almost 4 inches), became an All-American, and won the silver medal at the prestigious 2024 U20 Nike US high school nationals. This past year was an exciting year of growth for our daughter and we will forever be grateful to Coach Munoz. Charles Mauro – Caroline’s Father
Caroline Mauro (Athlete): In my first jump camp with Coach Munoz in October of my junior year he told me that he forms a mold of each athlete in his mind and trains them until they fit that mold. As I continued to train with him over my junior year, Coach Hugo’s words have actualized in myself as he has molded me into a consistent and technically sound jumper. Hugo can watch a jump and know everything that the athlete did correctly and what could be fixed. Once he knows what needs to be done to address technical mistakes, he guides athletes to fix them through his skill of explanation. Most coaches I have had in the past have just told me what to do —lean more, be faster in the take-off, run a smoother curve— but not Coach Hugo, he explains. He uses metaphors, examples, and drawings to depict to his athletes what he wants them to feel; once you are able to feel and imagine the jump you can execute it with a full run-up. Coach Hugo’s skill of noticing technical mistakes and teaching the athlete to feel a jump without those mistakes is just one aspect of Hugos coaching that makes him excellent. Coach Hugo Munoz is not just a coach, he is a mentor. He has a unique gift to understand not only the technical aspects of high jump but also an athlete’s mind. As a competitor, I have a tendency to overthink and Hugo has taught me how to train my mind just as much as my body. Hugo has made me realize that high jump is not just a physical sport, but also a mind game. As each person’s mind is different, Hugo’s approach to coaching mentality for each athlete is also different. I have watched him convince a self-doubting jumper to believe in herself, tone down an overzealous jumper to relax and focus on his technique, and seen my own improvements as Hugo helped me train my mind to relax and allow my body to do the work I have trained it to do. I have made many decisions during my time as a student-athlete but choosing to attend Coach Hugo’s jump camps was, without a doubt, the best. So, if you have the chance to train with Coach Hugo, don’t think, just go! 🦘🙏🏼
